We build BackOps after living the problem first hand.

We build BackOps after living the problem first hand.

At BackOps, we’re building the AI-native operating layer for modern operations. We turn complex, manual workflows into structured, always-on execution across systems and teams. That blend of intelligence and real-world impact drives everything we do—and we’re always looking for people who want to rethink how work gets done.

We started BackOps to change that.

The problem we're solving

The problem we're solving

Modern operations work is relentless. Your team is fielding exceptions from a dozen systems, chasing down status updates across carriers and vendors, reviewing documents under time pressure, and manually closing loops that should have closed themselves.

The automation tools that exist either require engineers to build and maintain them, or they're too rigid to handle the messiness of real-world ops. The result? Your most experienced people are stuck doing rote work — and your organization is one resignation away from operational chaos.

Operations intelligence can't live only in people's heads. And operations workflows can't run only on human effort.

What we built

What we built

Relay is an AI-native operations platform built for the complexity of real back-office work.

It ingests your SOPs, learns your processes, and deploys agents that execute across your systems like web portals, carrier APIs, ERPs, email, Slack, and everything in between. When exceptions arise, it routes them to the right person with the right context. When decisions get made, it logs them with full lineage.

Relay isn't a chatbot bolted onto your workflows. It's an operations OS, a living system of record for how your team actually works, and an execution engine that keeps things moving when humans are occupied with higher-order problems.

How we work with customers

How we work with customers

We don't believe in "set it and forget it" deployments. Operations are too complex, too variable, and too important to hand off to software and walk away.

Our forward-deployed team model means BackOps works alongside your operations team from day one. Mapping processes, deploying agents, tuning decision logic, and building custom insights around the metrics that matter to your business. We get our hands dirty so your team doesn't have to.

This model isn't a workaround for an immature product. It's a deliberate choice: the best automation deployments we've seen happen when software and human expertise work in tight partnership, not when software is handed over with a user manual.

The team

The team

BackOps was founded in 2024 by two builders who approached the same problem from opposite ends and realized they were describing the same gap.

Sean McCarthy (CEO & Co-founder), one of the earliest hires at Amazon Shipping, led global sales and saw firsthand how operators stitched together WMS portals, emails, carrier calls, and spreadsheets just to resolve a single issue. The problem wasn’t effort—it was that the tools weren’t built for the complexity of the work.

Henry Ou (CTO & Co-founder) built and led applied ML teams at Apple and ByteDance, and ran an ERP integration business. His experience working across fragmented systems gave him deep insight into why most automation breaks down at the edges.

Together, Sean and Henry are the blend that hard operational problems require: someone who has lived on the ops side of the wall, and someone who has built the systems on the other side of it. BackOps is the product they each wished existed and couldn't find.

We're headquartered in San Francisco and backed by Theory VC, Construct Capital, Gradient Ventures and 10VC.
